Pau Aguiló Hernández

Mallorca, España 2002

Pau Aguiló was born in Mallorca in August 2002 into a family with a deep connection to art. He grew up in a small forest on the outskirts of Algaida, a town in the island’s interior. There, with little contact with the outside world beyond a few picture books and historical films, Pau developed a passion for drawing as a form of play. To this day, the use of imagination, landscape, and historical elements remain cornerstones of his work, to which many others have been added throughout his life.

After spending time in Palma between the ages of ten and fifteen, he became interested in urban life and traded his pencils for graffiti cans. Before finishing his studies, he went to a remote village in Ireland where he spent a year rediscovering his passion for fine arts. Today he lives and works in London, where this year he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Camberwell University of the Arts London.

STATEMENT

A constant search for satisfaction after achieving a technical breakthrough, as well as the subsequent dissatisfaction when considering what the next step might be, along with a rich blend of cultural and personal experiences, drives Pau Aguiló’s work, both intentionally and unintentionally, to always seek new themes for new paintings, new situations for new scenes, new ways of repeating strokes and using materials in different orders, new ways of incorporating oil painting techniques, and the unique and distinct feeling that only the creation of each piece can impart.

The construction of worlds and the fascination with human societies lead Aguiló’s work to be superficially perceived as a surrealism that is at times deconstructivist and original. But it conceals a critical and/or poetic observation of the human condition from the perspective of individuality and circumstances. The history of various periods, mostly Western, films of all kinds, illustrations by masters like Goya, comics, contemporary and classical painting, as well as many other elements, converge in the inspiration for his work, reflecting the eclectic world of today through his brushstrokes.
