Oliver Roura’s work navigates between abstract painting and photography. His works are energized by constant technical experimentation, inspired by physical processes that occur in nature, such as the refraction of light. Roura works painting from the inside, composes symphonies of traces, allegorizing paths in which a vital experience is sedimented. Roura explores the qualities of painting beyond its classical conventions, creating a language of his own, in which the pictorial matter becomes the central axis of his work.
About the Process
Roura’s work is characterized by his peculiar way of creating his paintings. He paints on glass in such a way that the first layer of paint that he paints is the one that the viewer sees. He continues to add hundreds of layers of transparent paint and builds up the image until he finds the result he wants – those traces, those strokes, those paths. It is then that a process of closing the frame from behind begins, leaving it completely flat. Once he has closed the paint, he rips off all that skin, all that acrylic paint film and adheres it onto the aluminum dibond.”
